The Future of Chinese Herbs w/ Peggy Schafer
Peggy will discuss how current trends will affect Chinese herbal medicine in the coming years. Issues of international trade, Daodi, as well as accessibility and conservation concerns will be discussed.

Peg Schafer is recognized as one of the pioneers and leaders in the field of the cultivation of Asian herbs. Along with offering seed and field-grown herbs, Schafer’s own Chinese Medicinal Herb Farm operates as an experimental farm to investigate herb cultivation and aid herb conservation. Its internship program gives people hands-on knowledge experience in all aspects of growing and harvesting Chinese herbs.

The History of Chinese Medicine in America w/ Efrem Korngold

Dr. Korngold will share how Chinese Medicine has evolved in America and highlight the emerging significance and role of Chinese medicine pediatrics.

Efrem taught a small class of medical students from UCSF in 1974 and in 1979 developed one of the first acupuncture curricula for the San Francisco College of Acupuncture. He taught at the College for eight years, training several hundred acupuncturists. In 1991 Efrem co-authored, with Harriet Beinfield, Between Heaven and Earth, which has found its way into more than 200,000 hands and has been translated into eight languages.

Efrem had advanced training in Chinese herbal prescribing in Kunming in 1980, Shanghai in 1984, and after that with Fang Feng, an herbal doctor from Vietnam in San Francisco’s own Chinatown. These studies engendered clever ideas about how to simplify traditional herbalism for American providers and patients.

As a leader in the field, Efrem has lectured at sites such as the UCSF School of Medicine, Andrew Weil's Fellowship in Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona, Beth Israel Hospital in New York, as well as the American College of Traditional Chinese Medicine in San Francisco.
